Elaine Dickinson: Ted, I have the strangest feeling we've been through this exact same thing before.
That’s one of the great lines from one of the great sequels of all time, Airplane II: The Sequel. I know many don’t like sequels, but I love them. The aforementioned classic, Rocky II, III and V (although Rocky IV wasn’t very good) Godfather II but not so much on Godfather III, Lethal Weapon series, the Die Hard trilogy, Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi (Although the prequels are not very good) and the list goes on and on. All great movies, in their own right. I also love how in Airplane II they are able to poke fun at themselves. The boys from Old Crow Medicine Show do the same thing in “Cocaine Habit,” their “sequel” (for lack of a better term) to their hit “Tell it to Me.” They even acted like they were going to start playing Tell it to Me when they start into Cocaine Habit. Much like the “original,” this song is more of the same good music that they put out on their first CD. In fact, if you liked the first installment on OCMS, you will love the sophomore CD from these talented musicians.
Another thing that is similar to the first CD is the wide variety of topics that they discuss in the songs they sing. The blues, drugs, Unions, good or bad girls, advice, God and bobcats are just a few of the subject matters on this CD. The CD starts off with Down Home Girl, which I feel should be an instant classic.
Every time I taste you
It tastes like Pork and Beans
Now that’s some great writing, I don’t care who you are. Honestly, if I could find a gal that tasted like pork and beans, I’d marry her on the spot. This CD also has an old blues remake called Minglewood Blues that was originally produced back in the 1920’s. Another favorite is My Good Gal, which has a twist that even REK’s first bluegrass band would step back and go “whoa, that’s messed up.” But, cool song, never the less. You may have heard Union Maid or New Virginia Creeper, both good songs. Let It Alone has some great advice that I wish some would heed, you know who you are, and God’s Got It is another that could be a classic. Basically, if you’re already a fan of OCMS, you won’t be let down with this CD.
So, what have we learned today:
- Sequels can be good
- OCMS is great
- And, if you’re cute and taste like pork and beans, look me up and we’ll go out some time.
I’ll give this CD the same as the number of good Rocky movies, 4 out of 5.
And I can sum it all up in just one word: courage, dedication, daring, pride, pluck, spirit, grit, mettle, and G-U-T-S, guts. Why, Ted Striker's got more guts in his little finger than most of us have in our large intestine, including the colon!
Man, that’s a great movie.
