I was dating this girl once, but it seems every time we went out she was drunk, well, either that or in the process of getting drunk. We’d go to the bar, she’d get drunk. We’d go out to eat, she’d get drunk. We’d stay at home and watch TV, she’d get drunk. We’d go to a movie, she’d get drunk. We’d go to a rodeo, she’d get drunk. We’d go to bingo night, she’d get drunk. We’d go see family, she’d get drunk. We’d go to the zoo, she’d get drunk. We’d go to bail her out of jail, she’d get drunk. We’d go to church, she’d get drunk. We’d go to… well, I guess you get the idea. But see it worked, because in her mostly drunken state, she thought I was smart, witty, funny, handsome, rich, debonair, (I really don’t know what that means, but she acted like it was a good thing, so I’ll go with it) and she would shower me tons and tons of smooches. She was just that kinda girl. But then the worst thing happened, we went on a date and she was stone cold sober. (Apparently, the alcohol would have a bad reaction to the medication that she was taking due to an incident at the zoo) Suddenly, she viewed me as a smart-alec, witless, funny looking, not handsome, poor and not debonair, and worst of all, absolutely positively, no smooches. None. So I can relate to Lucero’s song, She’s Just That Kinda Girl.
Running down a busy street
She was drunk when she kissed me
I know better than to be
Falling in love so easily.
I am a huge fan of the rock stylings of Lucero. Others have tabbed their music as Alt-country or even punk country. I really don’t know what punk country really is or means, but I do know that I love the music these guys put out. And at times it is hard to pigeon hole their music. The lyrics are usually pure country, at least country before country tried to become more pop sounding. Their sound is more rock, all styles of rock that is, and their following is more likened to the following of the Grateful Dead, in that the fans of these guys are all die hards that will do anything to get to see them. Personally, I love the lyrics that Ben Nichols brings to the table. Musically, this CD is more similar to Tennessee, than some of their more recent releases. For me that’s a good thing, as Tennessee is my favorite CD they’ve put out. (but don’t get me wrong, all of their stuff is good) One of my favorite songs on here is I Can’t Get Us Out of Here. I love the whole song, it is well written and well played.
Long legs, use ‘em and run
Blue eyes that blind like the sun
I might not be the one
But that’s alright
I can get us outta here tonight
One addition to this CD that makes it stand out from previous works is the addition of the piano and B3 organ. It really shows growth of the band when Rick Steff sits in with them. Nowhere is this more evident than on She Wakes When She Dreams. I have a lot of favorites when it comes to this band, but this song is all ready at the top of the list of songs that they’ve recorded. Definitely mellower than a lot of their other work, but it’s the perfect ending to this CD.
She wears a sorrow her beauty can’t hide
I pray that she sheds it and sleeps the whole night
She wakes when she dreams
She sleep when she wakes
If you don’t care what category of music you are listening to, but rather just love to hear great music played well, Lucero is the band for you and Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers is the CD for you. But if you’re more interested in listening to a band because it’s the right “type” of music and is the popular song on the radio, then you’ll never really get this band. But you should try, because it’s well worth it.
So, what have we learned today?
- I have more luck with girls that are a little on the tipsy side
- Lucero is awesome
- If you’re drunk at the zoo, don’t get to close to the monkey cage
- And Lucero is awesome
I’ll give this CD 5 out of 5 drunken girls in a church.
